break so easy, written by Toni L.A. Cross 11/8/09

balled up fists
and a red scrunched up face

look at her
so tiny
she looks like
she could break so easy.

the first breath
she took in this world
came out in a screaming cry

a butterfly perched on her petit fingers
a look of wonder in her young wide eyes

look at her
so innocent
she looks like
she could break so easy.

her first word
was up
begging to be picked up and held.

chipped fingernails painstakingly painted pink
and a face endearingly speckled with acne

look at her
so wanting to grow up
she looks like
she could break so easy.

she chatters on
bubbling over nonstop
full of ideas and hopes and possibilities.

a sophisticated manicure hovers above an algebra test
there’s a little worry frown line started on her brow

look at her
growing up so fast
she looks like
she could break so easy

all she talks about is college
and becoming a someone in the world

a diamond ring sparkles on her finger
and her face seems to have a special glow

look at her
all grown up
she looks like
she could break so easy

her world revolves around wedding plans
romance and their future together.

her hands are white from gripping the hospital bed
Sweat is dripping down her face.

she looks at her newborn
so tiny
she looks like
she could break so easy.

the first breath
she took in this world
came out in a screaming cry
