Kay’s Story (Part Twenty-Two)

Stop! This is the twenty-second episode!

Looking for the beginning of Kay’s Story?

The irritating sound of flirtatious laughter floated across the grass. Cassy and Jeff were perched on her Martha Stewart-like portable chairs, sipping what appeared to be some sort of New Agey potion. Kay had to admit, they made a handsome pair. Cassy, with her blonde model looks and Jeff, with his all-American manliness.

She slapped at her arm and wiped the bloody remains of the mosquito from her skin, fuming to herself. Gotcha! If only all pests were as easy to deal with as insects…

She sighed and rolled her eyes heavenward. “Sorry, God. I know, he isn’t even mine to claim. I’m acting worse than Cassy! But seriously, Lord, I’m counting on you here, surely Jeff deserves better than her! She’ll eat him up and spit him out!”

Oh well. Kay looked down at her burger, which had suddenly lost most of its appeal. Most, but not quite all. She took a big bite and tried change the direction of her thoughts. A smile spread across her face as she watched Destiny, who was inspecting a ladybug with an air of awe. “Poor Baby, your Mommy doesn’t take you outside nearly enough. You know what your grandmother would say? That you need a good dose of sunshine, dirt and fresh air!”

She stuffed her last bite of burger into her mouth, washing it down with a swig of soda and stood to her feet. With Destiny in hand, she abandoned her picnic spot in search of some companionship. Over near the dessert table, she found Hanna and Shari chatting about an upcoming trip to New York City.

“Kay! There you are. I can’t believe you aren’t going to come with us! We’ve been planning this girl’s getaway forever! It is going to be totally epic!” Hannah paused and held out her hands to Destiny. “C’mon DeeDee, come see your Aunty Hanna!” Destiny cooed up at her, as she continued. “Kay, you could totally bring Destiny. You know we all love her! She’s a little doll!”

Shari nudged Hanna discreetly and interrupted quickly. “Of course, we do understand. After all, I’m sure you wouldn’t want to drag her around at all hours and everything. Plus, there’s nothing like a screaming baby at a Broadway show, right?”She laughed uncertainly, faltering into an awkward silence.

Hanna tried to change the subject, a sly grin on her face. “So Kay, how long are you gonna wait before you go rescue your man from Catty- oops, I mean- Cassy?”

Kay rolled her eyes, but couldn’t stop herself from blushing. “Seriously Hanna! You’re just as bad as Mrs. Peabody! He’s NOT my man!”

“Oooh, Mrs. Peabody already has you tying the knot, huh? You’ll never live it down, then. You might as well just give in and make it official!” Her eyes sparkling with mischief, Hanna started dramatically humming the wedding march. Shari joined in, and soon Kay’s face was cherry red and all three of them collapsed in fits of giggles.
