Kay (Part Six)

Stop! This is the sixth episode!

The pale light from Kay’s laptop glowed in the darkness of her small apartment. She typed in the first of the web addresses that Makayla had given her, glancing at the hastily scrawled list which filled both sides of a pink sticky note. She hummed as she scrolled through the pages.

Couples with children, couples without children…what about single women? Hmm, this website isn’t looking terribly helpful… Oh, wait! There, on the very bottom. “Click here for state regulations concerning prospective single parents, wanting to adopt.” Perfect!

She drummed her fingers on the table impatiently as she waited for her ancient computer to load the page. Her trusty laptop was a hand-me-down from her best friend’s college days and didn’t seem to like all the graphics on some of the newer websites.

Finally text appeared and Kay began reading through the laws of different states. Wow! It looks like its pretty hard for singles to adopt in some states! I’m surprised in this day and age… Kay’s thought trailed off as she came upon the name of her home state. “No restrictions. Anyone can adopt.” Those simple words leapt off the screen. Could it really be this easy?

Kay typed in the next website from the list. This one was a site dedicated to helping single men and women who desired to adopt. The information page informed her that she was better off setting her sights on a “hard to place” child; one that was handicapped, older, or had behavioral issues. Infants, it warned, were usually reserved for traditional two-parent families.

She closed her laptop with a thud.

I won’t give up! God had me find this baby for a reason. Anyone could have found her, but I did! And I love her! I really, really do!

A sob caught in Kay’s throat. I want this baby, but more than anything else, I want the best for her…

She slumped onto her desk, her head on her arms. What is the right thing?

To be continued…

Are you wondering what some of the sites were on Kay’s sticky note? Maybe you are a single person who longs to be a parent or maybe a single friend or loved one might be interested?
